While planning out our groups video for the IDEC challenge last night, I began thinking about what made me decide to pursue interior design as a profession. Many people see our profession as something superficial and materialistic, but interior design is one of the most human interest based career paths. We, unlike other design professions, design to maximize human comfort and behavior. We deal in more than aesthetics. As designers we understand and study human behavior to create spaces that improves the lives of its occupants. The layout of a space or color of a room affects so much of the human body. Every room you enter affects your mood, behavior, and actions differently because of the design choices made. The opportunity to do this creative problem solving is what makes this field so great. Besides my love for interior aesthetics, I enjoy interpreting people's needs and studying human behaviors to help better function within a space. There is great satisfaction in finding a solution that makes the client happy and you proud to have helped them.

When I get too stressed out in this major, I need to keep reminding myself that we design to IMPROVE people's LIVES! Maximizing human comfort and behavior is an essential part of life and happiness and we completely design that. I love that Robbie :)
ReplyDeleteThis is so true Rob. There are many facets of interior design besides ff&e that so many people don't realize. Ergonomics, accessibility, functionality, lighting, and understanding what the client needs and what they want (psychology!) all pose problems that we need to solve. There is such a sense of accomplishment I think when we are able to do these things effectively for a client.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post Rob! I think the most frustrating thing about this career path for me is people undervaluing what we do. Interior design is about creating an experience for people that improves their lives in ways that they often can't even fully comprehend. It's about being logical and creative at the same time and is about so much more than making something "pretty." I personally think that the greatest satisfaction we can seek as designers is knowing that what we do matters and makes a difference.
ReplyDeleteRob I think you did a great job summarizing some of the things we do and we value as designers in a nutshell. I also find great satisfaction is providing clients with a solution that they are happy with and changes their lifestyle in a positive way. The process of working with clients and educating them on some of the important topics such as sustainability makes our jobs as interior designers more than just providing a design solution.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I especially love that we get to look at the psychological effects of our designs and get to read between the lines of what people say and then put the puzzle together and create a great space! :)
ReplyDeleteI think the points you brought up are so true! We really do have and effect on people when they are in a space. The design of a room is crucial in creating a certain environment. I totally agree with your blog!!!!
